Re-Wilding The Homestead

Spring is near, the red wing blackbirds are back, daffodils are peeking out, and tiny leaves are appearing despite the recent snow.

We’ve been carefully considering some large landscaping undertakings and have decided that this is the year we’re going to start re-wilding part of our property.

Right now, there’s 2 sides that are more ‘wild’ with no grass, just natural undergrowth, pine straw, and moss. Those 2 sides have a charming trail through them that we spend a lot of time on doing our nature hikes looking for animal tracks and owl pellets.

Our plan is to focus on making our property more of a hidden oasis, surrounded by lovely trees, grasses, and native wildflowers. We’re intending to plan a trail as we’re planting so that eventually we’ll have even more places for nature hikes.

In addition to the wildflower & native grass seeds I’m ordering, we have several saplings around the property that need to be moved from their current location. There are 3 good sized ones directly in my asparagus patch that we’ve left in place for this purpose. I also pulled several sizable ones from flower beds & transplanted to large pots until we decided where we wanted them. They’ve survived the past 2 winters this way and are thriving, so I hope that we can successfully transplant them again to help fill out our new, natural, privacy fence!

I can’t wait to get started and see what this spring has in store!
